Rare coins
Rare commemorative 2 euro coins are among the most sought-after and most expensive 2 euro coins and sets. From the perspective of future appreciation, these are coins with the greatest potential for future growth, whether due to a lower mintage, an attractive design or other circumstances. Our selection also includes coins that are not yet particularly expensive, but whose strong demand already indicates that they may become highly valued pieces in the future.
Selecting coins with the potential for future appreciation is difficult, because it is not always possible to determine which coin will rise in value faster and which one more slowly.
In general, the most valuable commemorative 2 euro coin is considered to be the 2007 Monaco "two-euro coin" featuring Grace Kelly. The second Monaco coin from 2015, issued with a historically low mintage of 10,000 pieces, also commands a very high price. However, the 2013 Slovak commemorative 2 euro coin dedicated to Saints Cyril and Methodius in a wooden case in proof quality is already more than twice as expensive. Its price is high because only 300 pieces were issued in this packaging and, due to the unusual distribution, the coin is practically impossible to buy.
Slovak commemorative 2 euro coins in proof quality from 2016 – Presidency of the Council of the EU and 2017 – Universitas Istropolitana have also risen significantly in value. In both cases, the mintages were extremely low, making the coins very difficult to obtain.
A similar increase in value may also be expected, for example, for the Slovak proof set in a wooden case dedicated to the Olympic Games in Paris, of which only 200 pieces were issued.
The newly issued Cyprus 2024 commemorative 2 euro coin also has strong potential. Its price rose immediately after issue because it became the commemorative 2 euro coin with the lowest mintage in history. Only 7,000 pieces were issued in proof quality, with no coins released in UNC or BU quality. It therefore surpassed even the 2015 Monaco coin in terms of scarcity.
On the other hand, not every coin with investment potential has to cost hundreds or thousands of euros from the outset. Coins with attractive designs may also have potential, such as the Vatican 2 euro coin dedicated to Mother Teresa, popular themes such as the Italian Leonardo da Vinci, the French Asterix or the Belgian Atomium. Original colourised proof coins and certain Slovak silver 10 euro coins are also highly sought after.
