The archaeological site of Philippi is one of the most important historic locations in Greece and is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Situated in the north of the country, it is associated with important events in the history of the Roman Empire and early Christianity. Founded by Philip II of Macedon, the site contains remains of ancient buildings and centres of public life. In 2017, a €2 coin in proof quality was issued to commemorate the rich history of this archaeological treasure.
