The Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, proclaimed by Pope Francis, lasted from 8 December 2015 to 20 November 2016. This extraordinary jubilee year was dedicated to the theme of mercy, with the aim of encouraging believers to show compassion and forgiveness. During this period, the faithful were called upon to perform works of mercy and seek spiritual renewal. The year included the opening of the Holy Door in St Peter's Basilica and other churches around the world, symbolising spiritual openness to God's mercy.
