In 2016, San Marino commemorated the 550th anniversary of the death of Donatello, one of the most important sculptors of the Italian Renaissance. His works, such as the bronze David and the reliefs in the Basilica of Saint Anthony in Padua, influenced generations of artists. The coin pays tribute to his mastery and contribution to European art.
