In 2014, Greece once again issued its commemorative 2-euro coins in proof quality only as part of a set. The 400th anniversary of the death of Domenikos Theotokopoulos (1614–2014) and the 150th anniversary of the union of the Ionian Islands with Greece (1864–2014) can therefore be added to a collection in proof quality only through this set. Greece also reduced the number of sets issued that year to 2,500 pieces.
In 2014, Greece commemorated two important events. The first was the 400th anniversary of the death of Domenikos Theotokopoulos, known as El Greco, the world-renowned painter of Cretan origin who influenced the development of Western art. The second event was the 150th anniversary of the union of the Ionian Islands with Greece in 1864, a key moment in Greek history when the islands ceased to be under British administration and became part of the Kingdom of Greece.
