Frans Eemil Sillanpää, a Finnish literary icon and Nobel Prize laureate in literature, would have celebrated the 125th anniversary of his birth. Born on 16 September 1888, his works are characterised by a profound understanding of nature and rural human life. The €2 coin bearing Sillanpää's portrait was issued in 2013. In 1939, he received the Nobel Prize for his distinctive literary works portraying the lives of Finnish people with exceptional humanity and charm. His best-known work is the novel “Hurskas kurjuus” (Meek Heritage). His literary legacy continues to influence Finnish and world literature.
