Brother Cyprian of the Red Monastery, whose secular name was Franz Ignatz Jäschke, was an 18th-century Carthusian monk, physician and herbalist. He was known for his extensive knowledge of medicinal plants and contribution to medicine. His most important work is a herbarium containing descriptions and illustrations of plants used for medicinal purposes. Cyprian is also known through the legend that he constructed a flying machine, which he used to fly across the River Dunajec. His life and work form an important part of Slovakia's cultural heritage.
