Jozef Dekret Matejovie (1774–1841) was an important Slovak forester who introduced modern forestry methods in Slovakia. He studied forestry in Austria and Germany, enabling him to apply new knowledge in practice. As a forest manager in the Horehronie region, he introduced planned tree planting and the management of forest stands. In 1825, he became chief forester on Count Esterházy's estates, where he continued to promote modern practices. He campaigned for forestry to be recognised as a scientific discipline and for the establishment of forestry schools. His legacy lies in the sustainable management of natural resources and improving the health of forests.
